Greenville launches aluminium can recycling to foster environmental responsibility

Recycling aluminium reduces landfill waste, saves energy and minimises carbon emissions. It also conserves natural resources by lowering the need for virgin material extraction. This process supports the circular economy and helps fight climate change.

The partnership of Every Can Counts, a non-profit, with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) focused on can recycling awareness. Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons stated, “Thanks to the collaboration of MRCTI, Replenysh and Every Can Counts, Greenville is proud to be the first city in Mississippi to launch the self-sustaining Cans for Cash Circularity Centre.” He added, “This centre serves as a model for future recycling efforts, generating funds to support ongoing sustainability initiatives in our community. Earth Day is a momentous day for Greenville and I look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on our city and the environment.”

Scott Breen, vice president of sustainability at the Can Manufacturers Institute, emphasised aluminium’s recyclability. He noted, “This is an impact-driven program to increase aluminum beverage can recycling along the banks of the Mississippi River, On Earth Day, we celebrate this innovative recycling model, which leverages the power of technology, community engagement and the high market value of used aluminum beverage cans, with direct payouts for the program’s participants.”

The CMI states that the programme aims to strengthen local communities while offering direct digital rewards for recycling used beverage cans (UBCs). Greenville residents will receive USD 0.30 per pound for cans dropped at the Circularity Centre. Rates may vary by area and market value. Additional scrap revenue will support local community initiatives.

The city of Greenville can now leverage our tools and network to monetise materials and drive value to residents in a new way. We are excited to expand the Cans for Cash Circularity Centres to Mississippi to capture even more aluminium beverage cans for recycling.”
